How To Keep Your Skin Alive In The Dead of Winter

If you are like most people, cold temperatures leave your skin dull, dry, and feeling like all the moisture has been sucked out. This isn't a good feeling and can linger for months causing discomfort and frustration. When you go to apply makeup and see cracked skin and flakes peeking through, you know it's time to change up your routine to keep your skin glowy and alive this winter.

Here are some tips and tricks that we recommend you follow throughout the winter months to avoid the flaky, cracked feeling that many people are left with in the dead of the winter.

1. Use  Warm - Not Hot - Water

This is so important. Since it’s so cold out - especially during this polar vortex/deep freeze we’ve had going on - there’s nothing better than stepping into a steamy, hot shower to warm your bones. However, this is actually increasing the dryness of your skin because the hot water pulls away moisture. Instead, try to make the temp lukewarm and keep the duration of your showers/baths to less than 10 minutes.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is essential when your skin is dry. This may seem counterintuitive, since your skin might feel so damaged and delicate that it can’t handle the grit of exfoliation. However, a proper - and gentle - exfoliation  will get rid of dead skin cells and add some moisture back to your skin. Make sure to use a scrub with shea butter or a natural oil extract.

3. Use Hyaluronic Acid

One of the most talked about ingredients in the skincare and beauty world is hyaluronic acid. Although the word “acid” make it sound like it would be harsh on your skin, it’s  actually the key to smooth, hydrated skin. It is added to the skin topically and helps provide moisture as well as maintain the skin's hydration.

4. Use a Humidifier

In the Winter it’s pretty much a given that the heat will be on in your home the majority of the time. And, unsurprisingly, this is another factor that removes moisture from your skin. Using a humidifier will help put the moisture back into the air - and ultimately your skin - after the heat takes it out.

5. Drink Hydrating Fluids

Drinking at least 9 cups of fluids a day is essential to our bodies to function in general, but it’s also incredibly important for our skin. Keeping hydrated allows your skin to retain and replenish its moisture and brings it back to it’s glowy, natural state.

6. Get a Hydrating Facial

Getting a facial is always a great way to add that glow and hydration back to your skin. The winter months are brutal to our faces! If you’re considering a treatment, our Skin and Mind Blast facial is a combo of our insanely popular Lactic Peel and It’s All In Your Head treatments. It’s  super hydrating and relaxing and is a great way to bring back the moisture from the cold winter days.
